Marlene "Marty" Rogers Champions Abused Women through the YWCA
Marty Rogers strives to help women like her mother, who was a victim of domestic violence
SUMTER, SC, August 19, 2011 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marlene Rogers, Domestic Violence Shelter Manager for YWCA of the Upper Lowlands Inc., has been selected as a VIP member by Cambridge Who's Who for showing dedication, leadership and excellence in social services.
The daughter of a domestic violence victim, Ms. Rogers has devoted herself to the cause of providing a refuge for women and girls who have endured abuse. In her third year as a YWCA employee and 6 months as a domestic violence shelter manager for the YWCA, she oversees the distribution of food, clothes and shelter, furnishes women with professional attire for job interviews, and facilitates transportation and counseling. She also offers much-needed emotional support to the women in her care, and considers paying tribute to her late mother (who died as a result of domestic violence) in this manner to be the most rewarding aspect of her work. A volunteer when she first started, Ms. Rogers attributes her success to her positive outlook and her ability to keep her charges motivated and looking towards the future.
Ms. Rogers served honorably in the Air Force and retired in 1998. She received a master's degree in adult education and distance learning in 2005 from the University of Phoenix Online. She also earned a bachelor's degree in business administration and management in 2002 from Southern Wesleyan University. Her professional affiliations include SCCADVASA, Toastmasters International, and the Domestic Violence Coordinating Council. As she moves forward, Ms. Rogers aspires to establish private homes for unwed mothers and homeless female veterans. Her favorite quote is from Mother Theresa '...it's Christmas every day that you let God love someone through you.' She also believes that there is always something new to learn and considers herself a lifelong learner.
