Sylvia S. Koike Receives Highest Honor from Professional Membership Organization
Sylvia S. Koike named Professional of the Year by Cambridge Publishing

HONOLULU, HI, May 20, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Sylvia S. Koike, Substitute and Part-Time Teacher at Kalihi-waena Elementary School of the Hawaii State Department of Education, has been named Cambridge Who's Who Professional of the Year in Elementary Education. While inclusion in Cambridge Who's Who Registry is an honor, only two male and two female members in each discipline are named the Cambridge Who's Who Professional of the Year. The Cambridge Who's Who selection committee chooses these special honorees based on their professional accomplishments, academic achievements, and leadership abilities.

Drawing from over 31 years of experience in elementary education, Sylvia S. Koike is recognized for her expertise in reading instruction and language arts. Although officially retired from her full-time position at Kalihi-kai Elementary School, Ms. Koike continues to work as a substitute and part-time teacher at Kalihi-waena Elementary School. She is also a teacher volunteer for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program. She notes that her desire to assist the disadvantaged children of Kalihi initially motivated her to pursue a career in education with the Hawaii State Department of Education. She felt the need to help the newly arrived English Language Learners; for the past three decades, she has played an instrumental role in helping children learn to read - an experience for which she is especially grateful. Ms. Koike credits the success she has enjoyed in the education field to the support of her former teachers and mentors.

Ms. Koike holds a bachelor of education and a professional diploma from the University of Hawaii. She maintains affiliation with the Hawaii State Teachers Association, the National Education Association, the National Association for the Education of Young Children, and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.
