Mathy Downing Joins the Ranks of Leading Professionals
Mathy Downing considers herself to be a "teacher by profession and a child advocate by heart"
LAYTONSVILLE, MD, March 1, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Mathy Downing, Teacher and Child Advocate at Flower Hill Elementary School of Montgomery County Public Schools, has been recognized by Cambridge Who's Who for demonstrating dedication, leadership and excellence in education.
As a teacher of second grade students at Flower Hill Elementary School and an international child advocate, Ms. Downing has dedicated much of her time promoting medication awareness among children by being a voice for their rights as well as the rights of their parents. Earlier in her teaching career, Ms. Downing lost her twelve year old daughter as a result of incorrect medication and dosage. She made a vow to become an advocate on behalf of children. She attributes her success to determination, perseverance and organization, along with the strength to look forward.
Ms. Downing received her Master's in Elementary School Counseling from Johns Hopkins, holds a Master's Equivalency in Special Education and has certificates in Early Childhood, Special Education, Reading Literacy, and General Education. Ms. Downing is actively involved in Frontier Horizon, an organization fostering hosting relationships between families in the USA and orphans in the Ukraine. She has spent the past year working on obtaining international status for St. John's Episcopal School so that students from other countries may attend there. She is the Maryland State Director of the International Coalition for Drug Awareness, is a Patient Safety Advocate and Drug Safety Advocate for Consumer's Union, and is a member of the International Center for the Study of Psychology and Psychiatry and the Citizen's Commission on Human Rights. Ms. Downing is a highly regarded teacher in her profession and is a member of the National Education Association and the ongoing Parent/Teacher Association liaison. She has been featured in two documentaries; "Prescription: Suicide?", a film which has won both the "Spirit of Independence" award, and first place for a documentary in the International Family Film Festival in Hollywood, California, and "Generation Rx." Ms. Downing has appeared on "The Today Show," "Evening News with Brian Williams," and every major network. Her story has been featured in numerous magazines and newspapers, both here and abroad. She has testified before the FDA, the Institute of Medicine, plus numerous meetings before the House and Senate. Plans for the future include writing a book about her daughter's death and the advocacy that resulted from her loss, and a possible counseling position at a Christian school.
