Crib safety has recently come to the forefront of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. In late November, the CPSC released a recall affecting more than 2.1 million Stork Craft "drop-side" cribs. According to the statistics provided by the CPSC and Stork Craft, over a million of these units were distributed across the United States, while just under a million were distributed in Canada.

This massive voluntary recall of drop-side cribs was a result of 110 incidents in both the U.S. and Canada. The incidents involved babies' entrapment, suffocation and injuries from falls.

Information about Affected Products

According to the recall, only those Stork Craft cribs with drop-sides were affected. The recall did not involve cribs without drop-sides. Further, the Stork Craft cribs recalled were manufactured and distributed between the dates of January 1993 and October 2009. The recalled Stork Craft cribs with the Fisher-Price logo were manufactured between October 1997 and December 2004. Only drop-side cribs with a plastic trigger and one-hand-system hardware were recalled.

Questions?

If you have questions about whether your crib is affected by the recall, go to the CPSC's Web site for detailed information on the recall. In addition, Stork Craft has posted a toll-free phone number reserved for the crib recall on its Web site. To contact Stork Craft, call 1-877-274-0277. Stork Craft explicitly advises consumers not to attempt repair of cribs themselves.

General Crib Safety Information

Crib safety cannot be emphasized enough. Here are several important tips that are applicable to all varieties of cribs and should be taken into consideration when shopping for a crib:
-Do not use cribs with missing, broken or loose parts.
-Never attempt to repair a crib without manufacturer-approved hardware.
-New and simple is always better. While it may be tempting to use antique cribs, newer cribs are much safer. In that vein, simple cribs without drop-sides are more reliable and safer.
-Buy a mattress that fits the crib. You should never be able to fit more than two fingers between the mattress and the frame of the crib. Mattresses must be no more than 6 inches thick.
-Buy sheets that fit. Sheets that slip off the mattress are extremely unsafe and can cause babies to get tangled and suffocate. Always test the fit of the sheet before using it.
-Crib slats should be no more than 2 and 3/8 inches apart.
-Do not use any cribs with lead paint. Lead paint is very dangerous to children.
