As Connecticut children return to school and daylight hours shorten, driving, especially around schools, requires extra caution.

With schools back in session, many children walk, ride bicycles and wait at bus stops on their way to and from school, often during rush hours, when motorists are themselves on their way to and from work.

The Connecticut Department of Transportation urges drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists to each do their part to keep our streets and schoolkids safe.

Drive Safely
-Slow down. Motorists should always obey speed limits in school zones.
-Be extra careful in school zones and on neighborhood streets. Kids do the unexpected, so be ready for unpredictable behavior that may bring them close to your vehicle.
-Be especially careful of children walking or riding bicycles as you turn your vehicle at an intersection.
-Stop your car if a school bus's red lights are flashing. The flashing lights mean students are getting on or off. Proceed carefully when the flashing stops.

Walk Safely
-Walk whenever possible on the sidewalk. If there is no sidewalk, walk on the side of the street facing traffic.
-Wear bright colors and reflective clothing.
-Cross the street only at corners or in marked crosswalks.
-Whenever possible, walk in groups. A group of people is more visible than a single person.
-Look both ways before crossing a street.

Bike Safely
-Wear a safety helmet and reflective or bright clothing.
-Have reflectors on your pedals, frame, wheels and helmet.
-Follow the rules of the road: ride on the right side of the street, obey traffic signals and signs, etc.
