NEW LONDON, CT, October 29, 2008 /24-7PressRelease/ -- In honor of National Adoption Day, an unprecedented number of courts and communities in all 50 states across the country come together to celebrate all families that adopt. Child Adoption Resource Association, Inc., a non-profit adoption agency, will finalize one adoption on National Adoption Day in a New London courtroom.

"Working together, we hope to begin families on the road to adoption and help to give children in foster care the permanent, loving families that they deserve" says Sandra Couillard, Executive Director of CARA.

There are approximately 500,000 foster care children in the United States, and 126,000 of them are waiting for adoption. Since 1987, the number of children in foster care has nearly doubled, and the average time a child remains in foster care has lengthened to nearly three years. Each year, approximately 20,000 children in foster care will age out of the system without ever being placed with a permanent family.

"National Adoption Day is an opportunity for the parents in New London County and nationwide who have never considered adoption to learn more about the process," said Kerri Charette, Families in the Making cable access program host and adoptive mother. "My family adopted our fifth child in 2003 on National Adoption Day."

Many people considering adoption are inhibited by fears linked to untrue stereotypes about adopted children, according to the National Adoption Attitudes Survey.
Many prospective parents do not know that adopting children from foster care is virtually free. A growing number of companies offer adoption assistance as part of their employee benefit packages, including time off for maternity/paternity leave, financial incentives, and other benefits. In addition, Congress has made federal tax credits available for foster care adoptions to help offset required fees, court costs, legal and travel expenses. A federal adoption tax credit, effective this year, increased the amount of the credit to $10,000 for all adoptive families. Benefits such as these are enabling more people to adopt foster children into their families. Now, all these children need is a leap of faith and courage from adults with love to share.

Those who choose to adopt soon find that the joys of adopting a child far exceeded concerns about financial burdens and adjustment challenges. "Too many people are overwhelmed at the thought of bringing a child home through adoption. What they may not realize is how rewarding adoption is for the family that adopts," says Charette.
