Initiative for a social cause
Community-Led Initiatives for Child Survival (CLICS) was initiated in 2003 with the aim to develop a community-led approach that ensures the provision of high quality and affordable child survival and health services for rural communities.

NEW DELHI, INDIA, September 29, 2008 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Community-Led Initiatives for Child Survival (CLICS) was initiated in 2003 with the aim to develop a community-led approach that ensures the provision of high quality and affordable child survival and health services for rural communities. The program is being implemented in three Primary Health Center area of Wardha district in Maharashtra with a total population of approximately 88,000. It tests the role of Village Coordination Committee (VCC), a village based institutions in the delivery of decentralized healthcare.

The objective of the program is
• Providing affordable, high quality health care through effective partnerships at the village level;
• Building the capacity of coalitions of local partners to sustain child survival activities and health gains;
• Refining and testing a social franchising model for the delivery of child survival interventions;
• Documenting, disseminating and sharing key programmed lessons and results to facilitate adaptation, replication and policy advocacy.

The Vidharba region of Maharashtra, of which Wardha is a district, is the poorest region in the state. Located in a rain-shadow region of the Deccan Plateau, it is characterized by low rainfall and a degraded environment and is prone to droughts. Health indicators in the region are particularly dismal and are among the poorest in India. Clics always works for social cause. Some of the key issues that the programmed is addressing include:

• Poor child sex ratio (883) in 0-6 year's age group. Acute gender discrimination in certain villages with an alarming level of 771 females per 1,000 males in the 0-11 month age group
• Neonatal deaths account for about 70% of infant deaths.
• High incidence (51%) of professionally unassisted home deliveries. Low usage (28%) of disposable trained birth attendant-kits for home deliveries.
• Poor awareness (8%) regarding care and hygiene of low-birth weight babies.
• Delayed initiation of breastfeeding with less than 1% of mothers feeding babies within one hour of birth.
• High reported rates (77%) of childhood Diarrhea and ARI that go untreated in the first 24 hours. Only 30% of the mothers use oral rehydration salts (ORS).
• High rates of iron deficiency anemia in women. Only 12% of pregnant women receive the minimum ante-natal care (ANC) package.
